After having several airbags explode without warning and in some cases causing death, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is urging those on the recall list to have their airbags checked immediately.
The airbags under the spotlight were manufactured by the Japan-based corporation, Takata, and have now been recalled in over 12 million vehicles worldwide. They are in vehicles made by Toyota, Honda, Nissan, BMW, Mazda, and General Motors.
The defective airbags can spontaneously explode, causing injury and even death. In other situations, the airbags have deployed improperly and shot shrapnel at the driver – causing death in at least one case.
