Early Monday morning, an Ohio trucker was killed when he collided with the back of another tractor-trailer that had stopped on foggy Interstate 80. The driver’s own truck hit a concrete slab that fell off the back of a third big-rig. The driver was 41 years old, and a resident of Youngstown, Ohio. Three hours after the truck accident, he was pronounced dead.

The driver could not be removed from his truck for several hours, according to the Monroe County Coroner. I-80 was closed until noon while state police reconstructed the scene of the accident, which occurred at mile 295 near the Crescent Lake rest stop in Pocono Township. The truck accident backed up traffic for hours in surrounding areas as vehicles were diverted onto Route 940 from Interstate 380.

Improperly secured cargo leads to hundreds of truck accidents every year, despite strict regulations established by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). When loose cargo from the back of a tractor-trailer causes the death of another person, the victim’s family has a right to pursue compensation from the truck driver, his trucking company, and anyone else whose negligence may have contributed to the accident.
