A lot more people are home safe and sound with their families this Christmas than in previous years. Although in the first half of the year, traffic fatalities in Ohio were up from the previous year, fatalities over the Christmas holiday were significantly decreased over last year. This year, only six people were killed in traffic accidents over the Christmas holiday, just over half of the 11 fatalities suffered in Ohio traffic accidents last Christmas.
Doubtless the weather had a significant impact on the reduction in fatalities. However, another important factor seems to have been a reduced incidence of drunk driving. Last year, DUI accidents accounted for 5 deaths. This year, it accounted for only two. That is not only a significantly reduced number, it’s also a lower percentage (33% down from 45%).
After many years of campaigning, it seems like people are coming to understand that drunk driving kills, and that in order to avoid holiday tragedies, it is important to imbibe responsibility. With the upcoming New Year’s festivities, hopefully people will continue to observe the holidays responsible and keep their spirits under control.
